1) What's the difference between the Laptop Desks?
The 2.0 is a lap desk and a desktop stand, it has a positionable support arm to change viewing and typing angles.
The UltraLite is lighter, longer and thinner than the 2.0. It can be used as a lap desk and a desktop stand. However, the UltraLite is only recommended for laptops 5 lbs. and under. For heavier laptops, we recommend the Laptop Desk 2.0.
2) Are the Laptop Desk the same size?
The 2.0 is 20 1/2" long X 11 1/8" wide X 1/4" thick. The UltraLite is longer and thinner at 22" long X 11" wide X 5/16" thick.
The Laptop Desk 2.0 weighs only 22 oz. The UltraLite weighs just 14.6 oz.
4) What other colors do they come in?
At present, they are only available in their own unique colors. The 2.0 is black plastic with black no-slip rubber. The UltraLite's plastic and rubber are matching pewter gray.
5) Is there room for an external mouse?
Yes, but the amount of space depends of the width of your notebook computer. The Laptop Desk 2.0 is 20 1/2" long. The UltraLite is 22" long. If your notebook is 12 1/2" long, that leaves 4" on either side of your notebook to operate a mouse (4-3/4" on each side for the UltraLite). We strongly recommend the use of a mini mouse in this application to maximize the space available for mouse operation.
If you find that the 4" remaining is not sufficient to operate your mouse or if you find that the no-slip rubber that covers that area causes too much drag on your mouse, then we suggest the MouzPad. It was launched on April 18, 2003 exclusively for use as a mousing surface extension for the Laptop Desk 2.0.
6) How does the Laptop Desk prevent the dreaded Hot Lap?
The 'Hot Lap' effect is generally caused by placing a laptop computer directly onto your lap. The heat source from the laptop, usually the hard drive or the battery pack or both, will continue to build in temperature until a genuine feeling of discomfort is reached. The Laptop Desk acts as a physical separator between you and the heat source. Because it's over 20" long, it lets you move your legs away from the heat source placing them into a more ergonomically comfortable position. This action not only avoids the heat source but can reduces if not eliminate altogether the dreaded Hot Lap.
7) Are the products available in retail outlets?
In Europe
Lapworks Inc. products are distributed exclusively in the EU by Milestonepoint Ltd. www.lapworks.co.uk who offer deliveries to addresses throughout the EU. Milestonepoint are currently negotiating with their retail partners and will be announcing European retail stockists in the near future, watch this space.
In the USA
The LapWorks Laptop Desk 2.0 is sold in CompUSA and Micro Warehouse stores. The LapWorks Laptop Desk UltraLite is available for retail at most electronics and office stores under the Targus brand and is called the Notebook UltraLite Lapdesk.
8) What are the shipping methods?
As a standard we use Royal Mail and their third party postal providers within the EU, where necessary we also use FedEx and DHL
9) What are the products made of?
All of the Laptop Desks are made from Polycarbonate plastic and a soft elastomer no-slip rubber. Polycarbonate is the strongest of all plastics without getting into composite materials and is also the same material used to make bulletproof glass. The soft elastomer no-slip rubber is permanently bonded to the Polycarbonate and is odorless, UV stabilized and will not delaminate or separate from the Polycarbonate substrate.
10) Is the product bullet proof?
No! Neither of the Laptop Desks is bulletproof so please DO NOT try to deflect bullets of any caliber with either of the products. To make the product bulletproof, they would have to be 1" thick and weigh 200 lbs.
11) Is the product bullet proof?
The best way to determine which unit is right for you is to ask yourself "how do I use my notebook most often?" If you use your notebook computer primarily on your lap, then the 2.0 is best for you. If your notebook is 5 lbs. or lighter, you should choose the Laptop Desk UltraLite.
